Celebrated sleuth Hercule Poirot, now retired and living in self-imposed exile in Venice, reluctantly attends a Halloween séance at a decaying, haunted palazzo. When one of the guests is murdered, the detective is thrust into a sinister world of shadows and secrets.

A Haunting in Venice (2023), directed by Kenneth Branagh, is the third film adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot stories, following Murder on the Orient Express (2017) and Death on the Nile (2022). This film takes a darker, more supernatural turn as Poirot, now retired and living in self-imposed exile in post-WWII Venice, is invited to a séance by his friend, crime novelist Ariadne Oliver (played by Tina Fey). The séance is led by a supposed psychic, Miss Joyce Reynolds (Michelle Yeoh), but things take a chilling turn when one of the guests is murdered, and Poirot is thrust back into solving a new mystery

The film, inspired by Christie’s 1969 novel Hallowe’en Party, shifts from the traditional murder mystery formula to incorporate elements of the supernatural. The haunted atmosphere of Venice, combined with Poirot’s skepticism of the paranormal, creates a tension-filled narrative that explores the clash between logic and the unknown. The film’s setting plays a crucial role in building the eerie tone, with stunning cinematography and a richly atmospheric Venetian backdrop, including a creepy, isolated palazzo

The plot unfolds as Poirot uncovers layers of deceit, involving characters with complex motives, such as Rowena Drake (Kelly Reilly), a mother obsessed with her deceased daughter, and others connected to the séance. Poirot’s investigation reveals a tangled web of lies, secrets, and possible ghostly appearances

This film is a mix of psychological thriller, mystery, and supernatural elements, a departure from the more straightforward whodunit style seen in earlier Poirot adaptations. The haunting vibe adds a fresh twist to the Poirot franchise, making it both a mystery and a spine-tingling experience
