Emma has a wonderful husband and two kids in the suburbs of New Jersey – she also has a secret life as an assassin for hire – a secret that her husband David discovers when the couple decide to spice up their marriage with a little role play.

“Role Play” (2023) is a thriller centered around Emma Brackett (played by Kaley Cuoco), a woman with a dangerous past in the world of assassination. She has crafted a new life for herself with her husband, Dave (David Oyelowo), and their children, but her past catches up with her when a powerful, manipulative figure from her history, Gwen Carver (Connie Nielsen), resurfaces. Carver, the head of a private security firm called Sovereign, was Emma’s mentor and abuser. The story unfolds with Emma trying to escape her violent past while balancing her love for her family. When Gwen kidnaps Emma’s children to coerce her back into her old life, Emma must make a series of hard choices that test her resolve, pushing her to take dangerous actions to protect her loved ones.

The movie combines elements of psychological suspense with action, as Emma navigates the complex dynamics between her family and her past. The core of the film explores themes such as the cost of escaping one’s past, the power dynamics in abusive relationships, and the lengths one will go to for love and survival. The film emphasizes the internal struggle of trying to live a peaceful life when external forces, in this case, Emma’s past, keep pulling her back into violence.

From an analytical perspective, the film falls short in its execution of both comedy and thriller elements, with critics noting that the thrills are few, and the comedic moments don’t quite land. Despite strong performances from Cuoco and Oyelowo, the movie struggles to find its rhythm, with some finding it more pedestrian than expected

. However, Cuoco’s portrayal of a woman caught between her criminal past and desire for normalcy is one of the few bright spots in the film
